Toshiba 47TL515U 47″ Passive 3D TV Reviewed by Consumer Reports

The brand new Toshiba 47TL515U, Toshiba’s first passive 3D TV, was recently reviewed by Consumer Reports and given a fairly poor evaluation. For those not familiar with the concepts of “passive 3D TV” versus “active 3D TV“, basically passive 3D TV allows people to wear inexpensive polarized glasses just like you do in the movie theater, while active 3D TV requires you to wear an expensive clunky headset that needs batteries. Until the new 47″ LCD 3D 47TL515U model, all of Toshiba’s 3D TVs had been on the active 3D technology, so this is a major transition for Toshiba to begin offering passive 3D TV sets.

Unfortunately, Consumer Reports doesn’t seem to think that Toshiba did a very good job with this model though, noting that it received the lowest scores of any 3D LCD TV that they tested. There’s not really much more that you need to know once you hear that. In particular, Consumer Reports thought that it had “very bad sound.” Sounds like Toshiba needs to go back to the drawing board to find a competitive passive 3D TV model.

Consumer Reports 3D TV Reviews

Consumer Reports has been testing 3D televisions and technology as new items come to the market including the new Vizio lightweight viewing glasses that bear much lower price tags. The report indicates that passive television doesn’t provide strong vertical resolution. Nonetheless, consumers who tested the new glasses commented on the great brightness and minimal ghosting. The best rating thus far goes to Panasonic Viera for its 3D imagery.
