PC World 2nd Favorite 3D TV for 2011 – Samsung UN46D8000

When PC World reviewed all the 3D TVs on the market in 2011, it chose the Samsung UN46D8000 model to be its second favorite overall. A striking 46″ screen with one of the skinniest bezels on the market was “particularly praised” by its reviewers for “its brightness/contrast, color, and skin tones.” This Samsung model comes with Samsung’s awesome Smart TV Hub capability and features, with PC World commenting “these good looks accompany solid image quality and a long list of desirable features, including 3D support (with a pair of active-shutter glasses), Wi-Fi, a built-in Web browser, oodles of apps, and robust streaming-media services.”

The Samsung UN46D8000 is currently selling on Amazon for $1,600, which is more than $1k less than its list price.

Samsung, LG, Vizio 3D TVs Dominating Best-Sellers

Samsung, LG and Vizio are absolutely dominating the top ten list on Amazon for best-selling 3D TVs as of the end of August. Each manufacturer claimed 3 models in the top ten.

3 of the top 10 best-selling 3D TVs on Amazon were Samsung models, including the top-selling product overall.
#1 – Samsung UN55D8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED HDTV)
#7 – Samsung UN60D8000 60-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED HDTV
#8 – Samsung UN55D8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED HDTV

Overall of the 50 best-selling TVs on Amazon at the end of August, 12 of those models with 3D televisions. We will be keeping a close eye on this figure to monitor the growth of 3D TV against non-3D TV models over time.

LG models represented 3 of the top 5 best-selling models at the end of August, which probably makes them the winner in the overall field, although just a hair ahead of Samsung and a length ahead of Vizio.

Samsung UN55D8000 55 Inch Top-Selling 3D TV in August

When faced with an overwhelming task of figuring out something new, like which 3D TV you should buy to be your initial foray into 3D Home Entertainment, I personally find market data to be an interesting way to start my analysis. Like, for instance, I always find myself asking “What are other people buying, and what do they think about what they bought?” While this isn’t a singular guide to making a purchasing selection, it does have its value as a guidepost.

I recently reviewed the top-selling 3D TVs on Amazon for the month of August, and discovered that the #7 selling TV overall and the top-selling 3D TV model is the Samsung UN55D8000 55 Inch 3D LED HDTV. This popular model sports a 3D LED screen (HD of course), 240Hz, and 1080p. This TV is currently retailing on Amazon at $2,073, a significant reduction from its $3,599 list price. This is obviously Samsung‘s top selling 3D TV model.

The Samsung UN60D8000 60 Inch 3D TV Samsung UN60D8000 60 Inch 3D LED TV was the 7th most popular 3D TV on Amazon in the month of August, and the most popular 60 inch 3D TV sold. It is Samsung‘s 2nd most popular 3D television, and sells for $2,589 currently, much below its $4,300 list price. It rocks a huge 60″ LED HDTV 3D screen with 1080p and 240Hz.

Samsung UN55D7000 55 Inch 3D TV #8 Best-Seller

The Samsung UN55D7000 55 Inch 3D TV was the 8th most popular 3D TV sold on Amazon in August, and the 28th most popular television overall. It has a huge 55″ 3D LED HDTV screen, 1080p, 240Hz, and currently retails for $2,000, quite a bit lower than its $3,200 list price. It represents Samsung‘s third member of the top 10 3D TVs sold on Amazon in August.

3D TV Wars Heating Up

According to Businessweek, the 3D market is rapidly heating up. That means that manufacturers like Samsung and LG Electronics are pressing harder to get ahead of the other names in the 3D game like SONY. There’s no question consumers find the price tags on 3D television sets daunting, and the race to set the technology standard and achieve a mass market price range is at full bore among the major 3D TV manufacturers.

Samsung offering 3D access for Smart TVs in Europe

Samsung, building on its 60% market share in Europe will be offering 3D HD films, shorts, music and trailers in addition to features that used to only be available with BluRay technology. Samsung recognizes that viewers want more 3D content, and the growth of 3D content helps spur television sails. Alongside this change, Samsung’s development team is reviewing technical issues that have thus far held back sales – namely the need for 3D glasses, which are often brand-specific. Their answer for now is packaging Bluetooth 3D glasses at a very attractive price. These glasses display 3D content from nearly any part of a room as compared to more limited models.

Samsung Smart Hub: A New Level in All-in-One Entertainment

Samsung will soon be releasing Smart Hub panels that include not only apps and widgets but also an internet browser so you can surf the web in style. Having this capacity opens new worlds of 3D content to people who have invested in 3D TVs. Common social sites like FaceBook and YouTube are also featured on this product. That will bring Samsung up to having a series of three 3D plasma televisions, and a series of five LED 3D TVs.

Glasses-Free Samsung 3D TV Not Coming Soon

When Samsung originally revealed plans for a 55” 3D TV that wouldn’t need glasses the implication was that it could be ready within 3 years. However, that claim has now been reined in – with the potential time frame being as much as a decade. Toshiba also claims to be working on glasses-free 3D viewing with the goal of results by years end, but whether that’s realistic remains to be seen. The main problem in getting these systems to work is that the 3D content has to be delivered to 32 different viewing spots for everyone in a room to get the effects. While consumers would applaud the change, the technology simply isn’t user-ready or affordable yet.

Samsung 55″ 3D TV Offers Glasses Free Experience

Glasses-free 3D doesn’t have to live on a small screen. Samsung has a 55” screen that you can view from 9 angles without glasses. The television has an LCD panel that shows stereoscopic images to the viewer’s right and left eyes. If you’re not at the right angle, the view is 2D. Unfortunately, this particular system may not hit the market for 3 years.
